In order to maintain a motorcycle in good condition, vehicle owners must regularly perform periodic maintenance in which changing engine oil is the most crucial things to care about. This is to keep the engine healthy and remarkably increase its longevity.
Choosing a suitable lubricant product for the motorcycle can be an easy task if we only listen to the recommendations of the engine manufacturer or the suggestions of others. However, it may not be always correct because no one undertands the engine working condition better than its owner.Too regular oil change will result in the waste of resource and harm to the environment while delayed changing will terribly affect the engine performance and durability. So how often should we do it?
Let’s look that the main factors that affect motorcycle engine oil change intervals:
The age of the engine
New engines will operate much more smoothly with a cleaner combustion process, which gives the engine oil a good working environment and help to prolong the oil change cycle. Conversely, older motor engines will require a more regular oil change to keep the engine work properly and stably.
Frequency and range of movement
When the engine is working, the combustion process produces steam which is water. This steam will condense on the engine surface when it is cooled down to a certain level. Even though most of it is disposed through an exhaust pipe, an unchanged amount (due to the unchanged crankcase capacity) still remained inside the engine causing corrosion and rust and engine oil quality degradation.
An engine which is more regularly heated up and cooled down will require more oil changes than an engine working on a longer distance and more constantly. This will affect the range travelled between two oil changes.
Lubricant oil quality
There are many types of high-quality motorcycle engine oils available today: semi-synthetic, fully synthetic base oils with higher API quality grade (e.g. API SN). As a result, these engine oils can provide better engine protection, keep engine performance from degrading significantly over time, and have longer oil change intervals.
With AUTOX motorcycle oil, we recommend oil changing for new motorcycles (under 50,000 km), with mixed driving conditions (suburban and city) as follows:
– For FAST 4T 10W-40 (for manual transmission motorcycle) and FAST SCOOT 10W-40 (for scooters) manufactured with synthetic-technology base oils, meeting API SN standard, you should do oil changing after 3,000km.
– For FURIOUS RACING 10W-40 (for manual transmission motorcycle) and FURIOUS RACING SCOOT 5W-40 (for scooters) which are 100% fully synthetic base oil with Ester, meeting API SN standards, we recommend you to change the oil every 5,000km .
In addition, we also recommend you to change the oil once a 1 year for motorcycles which are rarely rode.
